The world is moving faster than most of us have ever experienced. Markets lurch. AI compresses timelines and rewrites roles. The geopolitical picture is more uncertain than it has been in decades. And when the world speeds up, the instinct is to speed up with it — match the urgency, push harder, keep up. That instinct is wrong, and it's expensive. The faster the world moves, the more dangerous it is to operate from a dysregulated state, and the more valuable calm becomes. Not as a retreat from the pressure. As the foundation for performing inside it.
First, what calm is
Calm is not relaxed. It isn't passive, disengaged or switched off. Real, trained calm is controlled power: high cognitive function, regulated arousal, the thinking brain fully online. But here's the part that gets missed: those operators don't do this only in the field. They train it every day, in controlled conditions, so that when the situation turns dangerous the calm is already installed. It doesn't arrive in the crisis. It's already there. Your boardroom, trading floor or courtroom is not a firefight. But your nervous system doesn't know the difference. The biology that governs performance under fire is the same biology governing a high-stakes negotiation, a difficult board meeting, a deal going sideways at midnight. Same system. Different stakes. Identical requirement.
What pressure does to your thinking

Your state is contagious
One more finding, under-appreciated by anyone who leads a team. Calm is contagious, and so is its absence. Sigal Barsade's research at Wharton on emotional dynamics in organisations showed that a leader's emotional state transmits to their people unconsciously and continuously — not occasionally, all the time. People mirror the physiological signals of those in authority: heart rate, muscle tension, breathing. A dysregulated leader doesn't just underperform. They degrade the thinking of everyone in the room. The meeting that could have been clear and collaborative becomes an exercise in collective stress management. A calm leader does the opposite: they stabilise the group. Your nervous system is always broadcasting. Every room you walk into is receiving the signal. The only question is what signal you're sending.
The still point
The nervous system was built for acute, short-burst threats — the ambush, the confrontation — followed by recovery. It was not built to run permanent emergency mode as a daily operating system. But that's what modern professional life asks of it: your system is running a sabre-tooth tiger response to an inbox. And the instinct to speed up makes it worse, because the capabilities you most need to navigate the storm are the first casualties of it. The faster everything else moves, the more you need to be the still point. Not frozen. Not passive. Calm and alert — operating from a regulated system while the world around you runs hot. That's the edge, and it is trainable. Five to ten minutes a day of deliberate nervous-system work — not to feel better, to perform better — and a way of bringing your state back online in ninety seconds when it matters. Every instinct says speed up. The evidence says calm down. Not because performance doesn't matter, but because calm is what keeps performance available when it matters most.
